Israel has never wanted peace
Israel has rejected all ceasefire deals, has bombed foreign embassies, and has blatantly flouted international law.
It should be abundantly clear now to every dispassionate (and passionate) observer that Israel has no interest in peace. This is partly the reason why Israel has rejected 9 proposals from Hamas that would have seen the hostages returned immediately.
There are two reasons for this:
- Netanyahu’s political survival depends on continuing the war (something that Benny Gantz alluded to when leaving the war cabinet).
- Historically, Israel has never wanted peace. Because Israel cannot simultaneously claim victimhood AND supremacy unless it is in a constant state of conflict.
Israel is trying to control the ceasefire narrative
As Greg Stoker brilliantly outlines on Sam Seder’s Minority Report: the whole myth of invincibility that Israel banked on was dispelled by October 7th. Now Israel is attempting to claw back a little of its pride and try to reclaim the narrative. They desperately need a “win” to try to reestablish the status quo before October 7th and redeem themselves to their own people and their allies.
